We would like to see all South Shore boats in the race, as well has boats from all other clubs, and with the new fun race, anyone can enter regardless of the type of boat, rating or lack of rating.

In addition to the Historic Crew of 2 which goes either around Catalina or the shorter course around Ship Rock, this is the 2 annual running of the Sea Base Double Dash charity fun race. For the Double Dash race all profits go to support the local children’s programs at the Newport Sea Base.

All races start at Newport Beach off the Balboa Pier. The historic crew o' 2, circumnavigates Catalina Island, totaling a distance of 90 nautical miles, with a “short course” spinnaker option around Ship Rock which spans 63 nautical miles. The new fun race, called the Sea Base Double Dash heads out toward Catalina Island but will round the oil platforms Eva and Emmy instead, returning to the finish line, only 16 nautical miles.

The Fun Double Dash allows for more than two people on board, but only allows two people to operate the vessel at any time. This allows friends to ride along and experience the excitement of a double-handed sailing event.

Proceeds from the Sea Base Double Dash will support the children’s programs at the Newport Sea Base. The Double Dash is open to boats of all types, and not just restricted to boats with PHRF ratings.

This year, we are excited to have added a Harbor 20 Fleet 1Regatta. This Harbor 20 1Regatta will start after the Crew of Two in the general vicinity between the entrance to the Newport Harbor and the Balboa Pier, extending approximately 1.5 miles offshore. There will be a pre-race party the evening before, on Friday, July 22, at South Shore Yacht Club.

Summer Fun with South Shore's Summer Beer Can Races, aka, the Hibachi Series. Tie up to the committee boat after the race and have a cold one while you hibachi your favorate delight. Starts June 1, and each Wednesday afternoon thereafter until Labor Day in September. Start time is 6:00 p.m. Check in time is, you guested it, sometime before that. HAVE FUN . . .
